How do I join the Weebl IRC channel?
So, what is this IRC thing? IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat; it is a method of communicating with a group of others in real time through text. There is a channel set up for members of the weebl community, which everyone is welcome to join, old or new.
How do I get there? You'll needs a small piece of software known as mIRC to join the channel and get chatting. There's a step by step guide detailing how to get started below. mIRC setup The first thing you'll need to do is download the software. You can get this here. Follow through the install process as you would any windows program. You should see a success window. You're now ready to run mIRC for the first time. You can either check “run mIRC” and hit finish or open it from the start menu. Once you're in mIRC you should see a little information about the author - hit continue, you'll be presented with a window that looks like this: ![]() You're now ready to start setting up mIRC. Start filling in your details – you don't need to supply your real name or e-mail if you don't want to. Nickname, however is more important. Your nickname (generally shortened to 'nick') is what you'll be known by; nobody else chatting on the server may have the same nick as you. The 'Alternative' field is the nick you will be given if your first choice is already taken. If both of these are taken, you'll be informed when you connect and will have to pick a new one. ![]() Once this is done, click 'Servers'. Scroll down the alphabetical list until you find 'Quakenet'. Double click Quakenet in the list, you'll be presented with a sublist. It makes sense to pick the server that is geographically closest to you, but is not essential. I live in the UK so I picked 'Random UK server'. Double click, you should be taken back to the Connect menu where 'Server' will have changed to the one you picked. ![]() You're pretty much done! Hit connect. You should see some information pop up in the status window. It's likely you'll see a message that says “Enter a channel name and click join”. In this, type “#weebl”. It's very important that you include the #. ![]() To automatically join a channel in the future, in the options menu, under 'Connect', click 'Perform'. Check "Enable perform on connect". In the Perform window type /join #weebl ![]() You're done! Chat away. Other small things it's good to know Messages such as * name dances are actions. You can do this with /me action. People with @ in front of their name in the list are operators. These people have administrative control over the channel. You can change your nick at any point with /nick whatever If you need any additional help, feel free to PM me. Last edited by Destrukto; 19-04-2009 at 11:40 AM.. |

I'm free to talk you through stuff too if you need help, and if there is a question that gets asked a lot, we'll add it here.
IRC really is a lot of fun, and it also earns you GeekPoints* You can also join #internets, which is basically a user run channel, which is active at different times and is equally welcoming. Both channels can of course be open at the same time. You do this by simply typing /j #internets in any channel or server window. Hope to see you on IRC! *it doesn't really. We're retracting any endorsement of #internets as of today.
It's a user run channel still, but what goes on in there in no way reflects what goes on on the forums. We don't own it and we don't police it. Any complaints about #internets should NOT be addressed to weebl staff as we have no power in there, nor do we want to. edit: in response Erasmus, one of the channel owners has asked me to direct any complaints to him, as he is in a position to deal with such.
