Would-be game developers can now rejoice. Epic, being the lovely people they are, have released "UDK", or the "Unreal Development Kit" free of charge. That is.. for non-commercial purposes. I'll get to commercial stuff a little further down.

Can I create any kind of game with UDK?
Absolutely. UDK is the perfect solution for any kind of virtual world you wish
to create, from racing games to simulations. Visit our Showcase to see some
of the amazing creations our users have authored with UDK.

Will my UDK program run on Mac, iPhone, PS3 or Xbox 360?
As of right now, UDK is a Windows-only program. Please see our licensing
page if you would like to discuss using UDK for cross-platform use.

I’ve been making mods for Unreal Tournament 3. How does UDK differ from the UT3 editor?
You can create standalone applications with UDK. This means that users will
be able to install and run your game without owning a copy of Unreal Tournament 3.

So, in short, it's the Unreal Engine 3. The one Epic licenses for masses of money. The only difference is, expectedly, you don't get source code access to the engine with this. But hey, for free?...

Okay, further up I mentioned it was completely free for non-commercial use. Now, if you want to sell your game commercially, you have to pay Epic a $99 "royalty bearing" free. One-off, nothing more. That is unless your game makes over $5,000, in which case, Epic gets 25% of your royalties from selling the game.

It might be a little steep, but I thought people might like to hear about it.

Which would be fine if I had done. Turns out someone managed to get hold of my details, rang up telephone banking, and transferred £2200 out of my account into theirs. I rang the bank and they sorted it out - I'll get my money back in a few days - but...holy hell.
