I would still be interested in playing a game (maybe a smaller game where people run multiple countries?), but not until at least July, due to upcoming exams.
Unfortunately, it's not just Diplomacy which has died; it seems the whole Forum Games Forum is slowly dying. ![]() |

Well, even though I think this has died, I'd be honoured to set sail with you guys one more time, or maybe even run the game again in case nobody's there for that job.
But indeed for the FGF.

I'd step in, but I would like to play a 7 player game, and I don't see that happening anytime soon

Just an update, so that people are aware of what's going in the world of Weebl's Stuff Diplomacy:
I've picked up a major interest in Diplomacy again, and I'm looking forward to playing another game on this forum at some point in the future! As I mentioned previously, I won't be able to play until at least July, but seeing as that's a month-and-a-bit away I thought it would be worth starting to find out people's opinions on whether they'd be interested in a game this summer. Even if we only find a few people interested on the forums, I know at least 2 of my friends would be very keen on joining in if I alerted them to this thread. It is still malcolio's turn to run a game, unless he has changed his mind. Could you please let me know whether you are still up for running a game malcolio, and whether you will be using the standard map or a different map? In other news; I have started work on a cross-platform map-generation program (still in a very early Alpha stage!), and I recently found out about a map/variant which looks ultra epic! (hopefully we will get a chance to try this out in the future; it looks quite a lot more complex than standard Diplomacy...) I apologise if I have bumped a dead thread which no-one has any interest for whatsoever, but looking at the previous posts and considering I can get some of my friends to join in I feel that we're a lot closer to getting 7 players than it may appear! And just to reiterate; there will be NO games of Diplomacy for at least a month. The only reason I posted this so early was to give people a chance to reply before the beginning of July. EDIT: Oh, and I'd just like to acknowledge that it was partly my lack of organisation in the Diplomacy: 3000 game which crippled this thread in the first place. Sorry everyone. I'd still be up for running a game, using a standard map.
I don't check these forums very often now, so you may need to e-mail me nearer the time: mal.robert.davis at gmail.com).

Has anyone had a go at the IRL version of this? Having learnt online and with Google Wave, it seems strange that you would go in a room together and play, how would you discuss ideas? Wouldn't it be obvious what you're planning from how much time you spend discussing with X and how little you are with Y? The other strange factor is the huge amount of time it would take. Nevertheless, I'm trying to find a group that'll play somewhere near Newcastle however every tabletop war group in always Warhammer.

I was playing some real-life Diplomacy yesterday as it so happens, and it is very different to online Diplomacy! Although it can be a bit obvious who is going to ally with who before the game really gets going, you will very often find that there is a loose cannon in the game (i.e. someone whose sole purpose in life is just to attack another empire, regardless of how well or badly it turns out for them). It is also very difficult to decipher what's actually going on in the few precious minutes you have between writing orders and discussing plans with people, and so the games tend to be a bit less about general tactics and a bit more about the diplomatic side of things. On the plus side, the back-stabs are more juicy when they're aimed at someone you personally know!
Oh, and as for the huge amount of time it takes, well... put it this way, I very rarely get past 1905... |

Well, after reading this thread, it unfortunately seems that the whole of the Weebl's Stuff Forums are gradually dying. This is a great shame, as I have thoroughly enjoyed the last 3-odd years playing Diplomacy, Wherewolf? and the occasional word-based games that have popped up. I would love to continue playing some more Diplomacy on these forums, but it doesn't seem likely that this will ever happen, let alone in the next few months.
Which raises the question: should all of us who're still interested in playing some Diplomacy find somewhere else to play it? Of course, I could have just done this by myself, but I don't really want to leave everyone else that has been playing Diplomacy here with me. As corny as it may be, you all seem like good friends to me now (groan...) and it would be great if we could join in a game on another website. Maybe even on something where the maps are automated, like PlayDiplomacy.com. Anything to satisfy our hunger for some European conquest. Again, I stress that I don't want to leave these forums, and I don't like posting "adverts" emphasising its death. But if we don't have enough people willing and committed to play, what other choice do we have? ![]() |

Odd that I choose to check in on this forum on the same day you post JC. But yeah, I'd like to keep playing Diplomacy so if possible it'd be cool to play it elsewhere. My e-mail address is mal.robert.davis@gmail.com and obviously I can get you in touch with Iball too. Let me know if you find somewhere to play, or we could just use google docs or something?

I've never actually actively participated in any forum outside this one, so I don't really know where to go in that sense! It would be good to find a dedicated thread on another forum to play some Diplomacy; after all, part of the fun is making the map each turn, and anonymous play is always a lot less engaging. There are a couple of solutions I can think of off the top of my head:
1. We play a couple of games on an online Diplomacy website, and try to round up some other people who are more "talkative". By this I mean that most people who play Diplomacy online are very antisocial and not particularly fun to ally with. So if we play a few games with us forumites and a couple of random online people, we might find some other people willing to play private games. (I've actually had this happen to me before, but only 5 of us were interested )2. We literally host a public game on some large-scale social website, like reddit, and see who signs up. I have no idea whether that will work or not, but it may be worth a try. After all, there are certainly thousands of people around the world looking to play online Diplomacy, so how hard can it be to find another 5/4/whatever? Thoughts? Again, I would rather set up a thread on another, more active forum, but I don't really know of any which would be worthwhile. Oh, and we could always host a game now on the Weebl's Stuff Forums where people run more than one country, but that would totally suck! |

I suggest the alternative history forum, which I'm a member of: http://www.alternatehistory.com/discussion/index.php
They've got a Shared Worlds forum, for games, with a sub-forum for nation games. The Chat forum isn't bad either, which you can't see unless you join up. Diplomacy games have been tried on there before but failed due to lack of interest (plus the map never looks as nice as yours!), but I'm willing to give it a go over there.
