TomTom Help
Right, I'm buying my boyfriend a TomTom for christmas, and I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing! I can't distinguish between any models, I don't know what good prices are, I really am useless at anything technical.
I don't want to spend much more than £150, and there are cheaper ones on Amazon and Ebay, that say "factory refurbished" but come with a year warranty, and say they're an authorised dealer. What does that mean? Is it worth doing? Help would be very much appreciated!

I have only ever used a TomTom One XL which is a widescreen satnav. While I am pretty against them anyway, it was easy to use. When the other half took a wrong turn (despite both the nav and me telling him!) it recalculated a new route instantly and told us where speed cameras were.
TomTom have those listed on their website for £170 but Amazon have some listed for £115. Personally if its a Christmas present then I would get one from a recognised vendor rather than ebay. Factory refurbished could mean anything, usually defective units that have been fixed. And therefore used quite a lot by the original owner.

I'm usually a Garmin person, but TomToms are alright.
As Tweekish said, factory refurbished have been used before, however you can't be sure if it's been used a lot, or a short period of time. I would certainly go through Amazon, plus it better if it says "Dispatched & Sold by Amazon.co.uk" as some other retailers advertise on Amazon, but aren't actually a part of the Amazon company. (hope that made sense) Tomtoms are cool because apparently you can put Homer Simpson's voice on them. Just thought I'd let you know li |

TomTom? Nonononono. You want a Garmin. They are so much easier to use than TomToms and the navteq maps Garmin use are way more accurate.
For under £150 I would recommend the Nuvi 1300. It's a basic unit with just a couple of handy extras. It has UK and Ireland maps, widescreen (which is lovely), speed camera alerts (free) and my favourite, ecoroutes. Ecoroutes being a system that takes your fuel type and fuel economy to calculate the most fuel efficient route. It also tells you what lane to be in at junctions. The cheapest price that I'm aware of is £129.99 at Halfords. |

Thanks for the input, I did actually read loads of reviews and they all said Garmin was better, but the bf wants what he wants, I'm just gonna let him pick it and me pay for it, much easier

if you want, here's another recommendation:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-Wides...7288766&sr=8-1 It's good because you can hook it up to your phone with bluetooth to use it as a hands free device, plus Google Maps has teamed up with garmin so you can find somewhere on Google Maps, click send, and you can choose the 'send to gps' option, and you can send the location via the USB cable supplied with your garmin straight onto the device and it shows up in your favourites |
