This is pretty much how I feel..

Know they are using uber cameras that will revolutionise the world or whatever and thats a big drawing point for many, but the film itself looks pretty average..

"I liked the graphics, and I liked the pictures..."

Ok...

Yeah I saw the footage today, and despite only seeing about 17 minutes of it it was pretty interesting, obviously when the film comes out you'll have more time for your eyes to adjust to the whole foreground-midground-background 3D split...but the way it works is pretty remarkable, the actual sense of a depth of field being there in front of you mesmerises you.

The footage itself...I saw what one of those guys was saying in that the live action and the CGI footage was very different, but it's also quite seemless and realistic...the whole spectacle makes it work, and it doesn't look tacky, though it might do in time if CGI improves, which it probably will. As for now, it's some of the best CGI I've seen. Pixar et al are brilliant at what they do: cartoons. They make the most detailed surfaces etc. But nobody has really created an almost fully CGI film look like it could be vaguely realistic, up til now they've just used make-up effects, costume and set design.

Bearing in mind that this film is probably 90% (if not more) CGI, it's pretty damn astounding. From the dialogue I saw, you could criticise it for being quite lazily written, but on second thoughts, the things Jake says sound vaguely like what a US Marine might say, for instance. I'm still not that sure about Sam Worthington, they're using him a lot these days (Terminator Salvation and next Clash of the Titans) and he seems a little bit too...Ethan Hawke? If that's the right description. He's a little bland, a little too familiar, average stock character. In my opinion...still though, Sigourney Weaver was great. Zoe Saldana is a little bit unrecognisable in her Na'vi form but meh, she was better as Uhura...still, looks like a good blockbuster, great for families, great for young teenagers, great for adults looking for a light sci-fi and a lot of spectacle but not necessarily just loads of explosions/muscles.

I dunno, you could see it as Fern Gully meets Halo, or you could see it as pretty breakthrough...dunno if Jim Cameron's balls have gone to his head though, since saying "I'm King of the World" when he won that Oscar for Titanic...

To be fair I can't wait to see District 9...a small amount of CGI goes further in my opinion. Unless it's Pixar, as I said before...

It can even be applied to older films; with Toy Story, it suddenly became obvious where the designers took shortcuts, because you can now see that background buildings have the doors and windows painted on rather than being modelled in 3D like the foreground buildings. In terms of immersion it is a significant advance that will eventually filter into the home (and already has, with 3D monitors already on the market), but whether Avatar is a groundbreaking film in its own right remains to be seen.

As for 3D screens, it requires special projectors but the bigger name chains are buying them in.
I always wondered why this wasn't how 3D films were done in the first place. Surely if it's a CGI film like toy story, all they have to do is render the film again from a slightly different camera angle for the other eye, then just overlap them and let the Polaroid lenses send the right images to the right eye.

I have to point out some parts of Beowulf looked completely photo-realistic. Then again, other parts didn't, but really, if I had only seen the really good shots I would never have guessed it was entirely CGI.

I watched the trailer on YouTube and thought 'wow this is good animation, especially on those humans'. Then I looked on IMDb and saw it wasn't an animated film and was like 'SAYWHA?'. So then I watched the trailer again, this time in HD and I was like, oh, it all looks real, just glossy. Basically, what I'm saying is, it's hard to differenciate the animated bits from the live action which surely means it's very good CGI -though still not perfect I should add. I'm sure the film is going to look incredible in 3D, BUT at the end of the day, the trailer gives no impression of the film itself being... good? There's nothing in it but pretty CGI.

The character designs are bland as hell and the plot seems wafer thin. Hopefully the film will have more depth than they're letting on so far.

Everyone should remeber when watching the teaser is that it is a TEASER, it is diffrent from trailers, trailers set out the storyline and trys to get you to go and see the movie, teaser's get you intrested in a movie so that you would go and find out more about the film.

also, the film isn't going for a gritty and dark setting, it seems like old fashion sci fi.

huh?

Anyway

Well judging from past works Jim does like to invest in his scripts so I have a feeling there's alot more than meets the eye here. Plot wise he usually is VERY good so judging a film by its plot from the trailer isnt a good idea Same could be said of District 9 after all...aliens chillout in a slum...get a "bad interrogation" scene in the trailer followed by some robot stomping about and humans running about with guns after one man etc (Obviously a bit more too it...but you get the idea)

Alot of Jim's underlining themes work really well, young people coming of age, life, technology and humanity. While these amongst others have been written about and it doesnt take a genius to look it up he tells them so well without throwing it down your throat. I have a feeling the story and plot is going to suprise.

About the fanboi-isim I have to say i heard about this a few years ago but i wasn't so much excited about the film but rather the fact one of my favourite directors was...well....directing again hehe

Regardless of how it turns out (Fingers crossed for "GOOD!") I think it will be a template film and a benchmark. Maybe in the same way Titanic and Terminator 2 was

Lets hope!

This looks awesome as fuck. I wasn't entirely sure about the look of the aliens and still think they're going to be a little odd to watch in conversation (seriously, those noses could have done with a bit more work), but in motion during the fight scenes they look really graceful and fluid.

Shame the trailer appears to be a near-complete run-down of the whole film, but it isn't going to hold any surprises plot-wise; possibly the ending might. Jimmy C knows what he's doing.

He says its his Masterpiece and being the control freak and having a style where he must be happy with EVERY SINGLE bit of detail I expect it to be good at the very least.

If people are not happy with it He is just going to be like Ridley with Blade Runner "Im happy...and I dont care if people dont like it"

good on him

p.s In regards to the "CG Looks bad" I think were forgetting that the WHOLE thing is going to be a visual treat with the 3D and depth of vision. It doesn't show well on the trailers. Its the next step up in films so im going to say its going to look brilliant with the technology it has available.

If it didnt have this cutting edge tech and the trailer was how it looks then YES....CG could have been better.

The new trailer is much better edited, but I've decided now I'm a little fed up with OTT action/romance films unless they're fresh and exciting, which this isn't if you look past it. I still see "Fern Gulley meets Halo". District 9 will still probably better this in most ways: I'm not yet fussed about 3D, just like I'm not entirely fussed about Blu-Ray. It could still be successful, but you see footage like this and it could end up being as exciting as, say, I Am Legend.

PS: anyone see the Prince of Persia trailer? Again - quite a ridiculous amount of action/CGI/explosions, but Gyllenhaal's accent is top notch, he should try it more often!
