Games Stuck in development Limbo (note: not about the game 'Limbo')
Out of curiosity to the few denizens of the Games and Techy forums left, are there any games that you heard about quite a while ago that you're really really interested in playing when/if they're finally released?
This could include games that promise to be exclusive to one platform you don't even have, but would find a way just to play that one game. For instance, in my case I've been wildly intrigued by the on-again-off-again-on-again Last Guardian. I don't have a PS3, but damnit, I'd find a way if this ever actually becomes more than just vaporware that occasionally gets mentioned as still having problems but at least not yet cancelled (e.g. at E3 this year). In fact, this thread was inspired by a search on the forum that turned up three mentions, all in the PS3 thread, spanning 2008 to a year and a half ago.

Not really "development limbo", but I'm sick of Indie Devs talking about their games, and then them taking half a decade to come out, by which time excitement and technology have moved on. I'M LOOKING AT YOU, SPY PARTY.
I want to play Spy Party so much |

The most excellent "Guild" series is sorely lacking a third part. I truly believe The Guild 2 to be one of the best strategy-history-chillaxing games of all time, and it's topped my favourite game list since it came out (toppling its predecessor).
They followed with two kickarse standalone expansions - Pirates of The European Seas and Renaissance (plus one crap expansion, Venice), but then the studio went bust. So dedicated to the game were many of the devs that they continued bugfixing and patching for several years afterwards and still do so. There has also been talk of them trying to buy the source code from the defunct studio or whoever owns it now, and taking it over themselves independently to create new maps and whatnot. Still, I'd love to see The Guild 3. ![]()

I think it's probably best not to follow games that MIGHT come out, you could just end up disappointed. Even when they eventually do come out, Duke Nukem Forever.
Somewhat relevant article about this here http://www.cracked.com/blog/5-great-...ed-video-game/ I'm sorry to break it to you, but that's not in development limbo, it was cancelled. ![]() |

Fair point, entirely. I generally ignore mention of games in development, especially now that they're routinely taking periods best measured in years instead of months to go from in development to 'out now' - even moreso if you include the genesis of the concept in the development cycle.
But I suspect, like me, most people have at least one that they heard of/saw preliminary content from/read about while looking for something else that struck enough interest to override reasonable skepticism of quality (or even release). ...Even if it winds up not meeting the lowest of low expectations...

I think the thing that sparks a lot of these kinds of 'will ___ come out?" questions is that practically as soon as one game is out, the next one is being asked about - case in point, Skyrim had barely been released a few days when people were asking the devs and speculating on Twitter etc "when is Elder Scrolls V coming out"?.
This is just fuel to the people who get off on a bit of attention seeking by creating falsified articles, interviews and suchlike saying juuuuuust enough to tease fans who desperately want another 'hit'. Not so much with Skyrim type scenarios, but these are exasperated when you look at games like The Sims - it's been a number of years since Sims 3, so there's a crapload of people asking "When is The Sims 4 coming out" on Google (I did it myself recently, ahem..). Given that people -want- to think there's one coming out, it's a lot easier for someone to fake something and get people excited - I still don't know whether it's going to be created or not. On the one side, there's a video which purports to be 'leaked' showing sims-style gameplay but amazing graphics and textures - to the point where it's far easier to believe that the video is in fact an advert for a future housing development. There's also a staff member who's updated his online CV stating that he's been working on a to-be-named new Sims game since late 2010. On the other side however, there's the staff members who've said categorically that there won't be a Sims 4 at all, and that it'd be pretty difficult for a company like EA to keep a new one under its collective hat for two and a half years, I'd have thought. I've entirely forgotten my point. Um. I think it was something like, with games that people -want- to come out, it's probably best to wait for an official announcement. But hey - we all love teasers, right? (BTW - the vid purporting to be leaked Sims 4 material - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpZp61vr5-c )

The internet makes that even more complicated, for sure.
If you go by Google search results people have been talking about Bioshock '4' since before Infinite was first mentioned as a concept, Assassin's Creed 4 for at least the last few months (not including the results that go by sequence instead of intent, and return Brotherhood and Revalations as 3 and 4 respectively), and an absolute crapload of WiiU versions of things. I suppose it might be worth differentiating between proposed sequels and entirely new properties. DNF - while a massive failure - had the shadow of DN3D looming over it during the vaporware years, meaning the failure was to a degree relative to whether or not you were already invested in the series. But a completely new IP has less expectation unless someone goes and spoils it by explicitly referring to at least a 'spiritual predecessor' to which it will inevitably be directly compared. ...on that note, I just realized my whole motivation for the thread (Last Guardian) is already potentially undermined by reference to two prior titles as SPs.

I'm still waiting for Black Mesa, but I don't think its actually in limbo, its just been six years since it was announced
. But I ain't mad at the team behind it because a) it's free and b) they all have "proper" jobs outside the project. Got a feeling its coming real soon though And I agree with whoever said Sonic Xtreme, that game looked brillant, get rid of all the crappy new sonics and work on that one |
