Ye gods, I wanted that game so much when I was about 12 and had an Amiga 600+. I eventually got it via an emulator; only pain is that often the alien moves take anything up to several minutes - you can essentially go for a crap after every move of yours.

But, a remake? Didn't they just carry the brand on to near bloody extinction anyway? All the X-COM games...I'm sure I've got about 7 of those just on the PC O_o

The official remake is made by 2K and due out in October.

And yes, I recall there being about 9 different incarnations of X-COM over the years, and none of them were particularly great after the first. I recall Terror From the Deep being virtually identical in every way to UFO but even harder (if that's possible) and with some occasional odd behaviour.

You can get what's now called X-COM: UFO Defense (basically UFO: Enemy Unknown tidied up and made stable) via Steam for £1.49. It uses DOSBox but it's fully functional and requires no mucking about. Should you so desire there are also mods and add-ons available online which fix some of the oddities inherent in the game's design.

Means that for pennies you can play the classic game on a current system and pretty much bug-free. All there, right down to the vertical difficulty curve and soldiers who couldn't hit a barn door from inside the barn.

Despite this, there's also a couple of fan-made remakes.

OpenXCom is a faithful remake in progress using current technology, designed to run using modern programming languages. Given the stability of the Steam version, however, I'm a little at a loss as to the point of this.

It even requires you to own a version of UFO which it then fishes the data files from. All seems a bit redundant.

Then there's UFO: Alien Invasion which is an updated remake with a modern 3D engine, new graphics and redesigned gameplay, still under devlopment.

Given that this sort of 3D isometric game has a fairly limited appeal by modern standards (and if it wasn't for Diablo 3 would probably have died out altogether by now) it seems a little unnecessary for developers to be investing in a remake, but nonetheless I'll give it a look as and when it's released. However, I suspect I'll end up going back to my Steam version of UFO, where I've managed to do three or four away missions without losing half my team! Miraculous.

They're also doing an in-universe but completely different game just called "XCOM" which is a tactical FPS. No idea how that's going to turn out.

Oh god yes. If you managed to line up four crewmembers in direct line of sight to the alien from within 6, 7 paces; you could pretty much guarantee you might end up with one left alive after you and the alien exchanged fifty shots.

In fact, I'm going to go and play it now.

One technique I developed in a recent playthrough is useful on Crash Site missions - as soon as you find the entrance to the crashed ship, line your guys in front of it and wait. The very instant one single alien appears spam the entrance to the ship with grenades/rockets. There's a fair chance you'll take out half the alien menace en masse, as they do like to queue up behind the door with their lunchboxes and rucksacks.

Just make sure you've cleared the surrounding countryside first.

Less effective in urban environments, whilst it can take out grouped aliens and also open up holes in the scenery to increase line of sight, it does have the unfortunate side effect of exploding nearby civilians, which doesn't do your global rating much good.

Although I did once get stymied when my troops were guarding the UFO door using the method above, blissfully unaware there was a hole blown in the back of the crashed ship. The aliens just went round the other way and promptly enfiladed - filleted - my team.

Happy days!
